Does anyone think Bobby Parnell can be a good setup man in the future for the Mets and maybe perhaps a closer? Just want opinions.

Well, Lets break down his 09' season statistically first:

Stats by Month

April:

0 wins, 0 losses, 1.74 ERA, 11 relief appearances, 10.1 innings pitched, 0 saves in 0 opportunities, 12 hits allowed, 2 runs allowed, 2 earned runs, 0 homeruns allowed, 3 walks allowed, and 7 strikeouts

He proved to be a premier middle reliever, and came up big for the Mets.

May:

2 wins, 0 losses, 2.45 ERA, 14 relief appearences, 11.0 innings pitched, 0 saves in 2 opportunities, 12 hits allowed, 5 runs allowed, 3 earned runs, 0 homeruns allowed, 6 walks allowed, and 12 strikeouts

Parnell was promoted to Setup man after J.J Putz struggled, and he proved to be a premier setup man, and did very well for the Mets, not to mention striking out more people.

June:

0 wins, 3 losses, 13.50 ERA, 14 relief appearances, 8.0 innings pitched, 0 saves in 1 opportunity, 18 hits allowed, 12 runs allowed, 12 earned runs, 2 homeruns allowed, 6 walks allowed, and 5 strikeouts

Parnell struggled in a setup role, and really was a disapointment. Although, it's not as bad as it seems. June 1st through June 9th, Parnell appeared in relief 4 times, pitching shutout ball each time. On June 10th through 11th, Parnell appeared in relief 2 times, pitching 2.1 innings and gave up 2 earned runs. THen interleauge started. On June 16th Parnell gave up 2 earned runs to the Baltimore Orioles. THen on June 19th, Parnell gave up 2 earned runs to the Tampa Bay Rays. Then, on June 21st Parnell gave up 4 earned runs to the Tampa Bay Rays. Then on June 29th he gave up 2 runs to the Brewers.

July:

0 wins, 0 losses, 0.00 ERA 12 relief appearances, 10.1 innings pitched, 0 saves in 0 opportunities, 5 hits allowed, 0 runs, 0 earned runs, 5 walks allowed, and 9 strikeouts.

Parnell pitched greatly, and returned better than before, showing to be a great setup man.

Now we will break down his starts one by one, but first his relief before starting.

From August 1st to 5th, Parnell appeared in relief 3 times, pitching 6 innings, 0 wins, 0 losses, 2 runs allowed, 2 earned runs, 5 strikeouts, 4 hits allowed, and 1 out of 2 save opportunity

1st start August 8th: 0 wins 1 loss, 2.1 innings pitched, 4 hits allowed, 2 runs. 2 earned runs, 0 homeruns allowed, 3 walks allowed, 1 strikeout

Average appeareance, didn't last long but on 65 pitch limit

2nd start August 14th: 1 win, 0 losses, 6.0 pitched, 3 hits allowed, 0 runs, 0 earned runs, 0 homeruns allowed, 7 strikeouts

Great perfomance, Shows brilliance

3rd start August 19th: 0 wins, 1 loss, 3.0 innings pitched, 9 hits allowed, 9 runs, 9 earned runs, 1 homerun allowed, 2 walks allowed, 1 strikeout

Does a horrific job

4th Start August 24th: 0 wins, 1 loss, 5.0 innings pitched, 4 hits allowed, 5 runs, 5 earned runs, 2 homeruns allowed, 3 walks allowed, 3 strikeouts

Average performance, nothing more, nothing less.

5th start August 29th: 0 wins, 1 loss, 4.2 innings pitched, 9 hits allowed, 8 runs allowed, 8 earned runs, 1 homerun allowed, 2 walks allowed, 2 strikouts

Horrible, that's it.

6th start September 4th: 0 wins, 0 losses, 7.0 innings pitched, 5 hits allowed, 0 runs, 0 runs allowed, 0 homeruns allowed, 3 walks allowed, 7 strikeouts

Great performance, brilliant

7th start September 10th: 0 wins, 1 loss, 5.0 innings pitched, 7 hits allowed, 6 runs allowed, 5 earned runs, 1 homerun allowed, 5 walks allowed, 6 strikeouts

Average, nothing more, nothing less

8th start September 15th: 0 wins, 0 losses, 3.1 innings pitched, 7 hits allowed, 4 runs allowed, 3 earned runs, 0 homeruns allowed, 3 walks allowed, 4 strikeouts

Average performance

Then, he was demoted back to the bullpen. There, he had 1 win, 0 losses, 5 relief appearances, 5.1 innings pitched, 1 hit allowed, 1 run allowed, 1 earned run, 1 homerun allowed, 3 walks allowed, and 4 strikeouts. Parnell had a season with ups and downs, but did pretty good for his first full season.

Well, Bobby Parnell won't be the Mets setup man next season. He has the stuff. ANd he will never be the closer, the Mets aren't going to just let Francisco ROdriguez walk, they'll resign him. He'll be a starter, he showed signs of brilliance, and Manuel like hi there. He may compete for a spot if they have a spot open, if not a few, with al the questions in the rotation. I believe they will either have him in the rotation to start off the season, or send him to the minors, as a starter for month or two. Parnell has a 95 MPH plus fastball, and has good starter potential. He is going to be in there rotation this year, but it'll either be right away or later.

I love Bobby Parnell and more time than not he went out there and got the outs they needed. I think Bobby was lost starting in the majors after being a reliever all season and not starting in at least a year since he was a starter in the minors. I'm not saying he was lights out, but he was still one of the more consistent and trustworthy relievers. I feel comfortable more times than not of having Bobby pitching in the 8th inning with a lead. I think he could become the Mets' closer of the future with a little more relief and major league experience and exposure. There's a reason why the Mets refuse to trade him.

He's more of a 7th inning guy. He doesn't have the nerves that are needed in a closer or set-up mans role. I still think he can be a good starter though. I know it didn't work well last year for him in the starters role, but he was just stuck there in the middle of the season. I don't think that was the best thing to look at to evaluate his starting pitching potential. However, for next year I think the best place to put him is in the 7th inning. He'll be the most affective there next year, but I can definitely see him as a starter down the road.

I think he'd make a good closer, but if the rumors are true that the Mets want Roy Halladay, then Mr. Parnell will be finding himself in Toronto sometime soon....

Not a closer, probably more suited for middle innings (5th, 6th or 7th). He's definitely not a starter, and they need to establish that from Day 1 when they get to Spring Training.
