Third Base Or Short Stop!?!?!?

OKAY SO IM PLANNIG TO PLAY SOFTBALL IN MY HIGH SCHOOL YEAR(10TH) BUT I WAS WONDERING WICH POSITON SHOULD I PLAY SHORTSTOP (were alex rodriguez use to play in his early years) OR THIRD BASE (were a-rod plays now with the yankees)....

You should practice both positions and see where you are most comfortable, then tryout for that position. Bottom line is the coach will probable make the decision for you.

The Ball gets to you faster at Third base and the position is much more Reaction than anticipating ball movement or hops. SS you usually have more time to get to the ball and judge what its going to do. I played 3B in Softball for 6 years, but if i was asked if i wanted to move to SS ild have screamed H*LL YES!! lol. im not saying SS is easier, but i am saying that most hitters are Right Handed and standing down at third base with a strong jerk pull hitter, with the Reduced infield size in softball, makes you sorta feel like the Third Base Coaches for the Yankees when Gary sheffield is at the plate...a bit uncomfy LOL...the ball literally gets on you in the blink of an eye. So if yer quick, then ok, play 3B.. but if you need a split second more time to react and move, play SS, and play a Deep SS to give you time to move laterally (side to side) because you can ALWAYS run in fast if a ball isnt hit well to field it.

As for the Red Sox fan, thank you for proving my point that most of you are complete idiots (most because I know some Red Sox fans, like my French teacher, who actually know the game of baseball and dont go around shouting 'THE RED SOX ARE BETTER THAN EVERYONE!' when they're 15 games out of first place...)



But anyway back the topic at hand...



I play both. You need to have a good arm for both positions. If you dont have that look at 2nd base. If you have the arm, its all about your athletic abilities. Both positions need pretty good reaction time, third base more-so than SS. If you have good range and good hand-eye coordination, play SS. If you dont have the range but can just plain knock balls down, play 3B. All-in-all its wherever you feel comfortable.



I've had high school coaches tellin me I should be a LF for 4 years. I'm graduating HS after this year with Division I colleges looking at me to play SS for them. So no matter what happens, good luck and stick with it.

If you can hit well you should play 3rd base. You will be more likely to make the team. If you are better defensively SS is the way to go. Softball the SS is a defensive only spot and if you can hit all the better. Best of luck to you next season.

Short stop is a better position, unless all the batters are right handed hitters and you can make all of the outs at third. Try not to model yourself after A-Rod, He's a spoiled baby who can't take responsibilities for his own mistakes.. Good Luck with baseball.

i also play both SS and 3rd for HS, but with the lack of athletism on my team, i play SS. if your quicker and more agile and have range, play SS. if your not as agile but have a strong arm and good reflexes, play 3rd. also dont model yourself after a-rod, if u want a SS/3B to look up to, go no further than Cal Ripken Jr.

Third Base. That's my position. It's a pretty good one. You get to cover the base, you get to catch foul balls, and you can catch easy pop flys and line drives that come to you. It's my favorite position.
