Depends on what size you are (height and length of arms), how far back you stand from the plate, how strong you are and what you feel comfortable with.

First of all, you need to look at the regulations in your league. Some leagues only allow wooden bats. Some leagues only allow aluminum bats with a restriction of the drop on them. Midgets or High school play, you can't have higher drop than -3. If you do, your bat is illegal. So you want a bat that fits into your regulations. Secondly, you'll want a bat that you can swing easily (That's not too heavy). Bat speed is everything. If your bat is too heavy, you won't be able to come around on a fastball and hit it properly. Everything else is personal preference. How long it is depends on where you stand, close or back from the plate. You also might want to check out the grips because vibration can suck if you take one off the hands or hit it improperly (Your hands will smart for a while after bad contact).
Another note would be to check temperature restrictions. Some bats have guidelines that you can't use them under certain temperatures. So if you play in Canada or other areas with "Colder" weather, some of the bats out there are useless and a waste of money.

I'll see if I can explain this...
What you'll want to do is make a circle with your index finger and thumb and hold the bat like that at the end of the knob. While you're holding the bat like that hold it out straight out in front of you so the bat is parallel to the ground. You should be able to hold the bat out like that without struggling for 15 seconds. If you can do that then you should be able to control the bat at the plate.
