1) False - How can you not love Ozzie



2) True - At the beginning of the season, I would have thought they'd be about 10 games under .500 by now. I couldn't have been more wrong. We heard all winter about how it would be a three team race for the Central. I think everyone blew that one. If you're not surprised by The Pirates being in first, and you predicted it before the season, your either brilliant, or more likely, dumb and lucky.



3) TRUE! - Even as a Reds fan, I'll admit that the old Cardinals broadcaster Jack Buck is one of, if not the, greatest broadcaster of all time. But Joe Buck, is one of the worst I've ever heard. He tends to ignore the game and just go on rants about celebrities in the crowd. How one came from the other, I'll never know.



4) True - I'm a huge fan of Josh Hamilton.



5) Yes but as a Reds fan, I'm a bit biased. I'll admit he's a jerk, and he should never be allowed to be a part of the game as a manager or otherwise. But I don't think that means he should be out of the hall. I've been reading a biography on Ty Cobb lately and I can't say that he's any better. He was very well known for betting on how well he would play in games and was, let's face it, probably the worst person to ever play the game. But Cobb's numbers say enough, he was one of the greatest to ever play and that's all The Hall of Fame should be about. It's not about how good of a person you are. It's about how good of a player you are.

I generally like the direction Nolan Ryan has taken the Rangers, but they were pretty obnoxious in the Cliff Lee negotiations.



I go back and forth on Pete Rose. Part of me just says let everyone in based on the numbers alone. There is nobody who has played the game who is a worse human being than Ty Cobb and he is deservingly in the hall, even though there are gambling and game-fixing accusations against him too. On the other hand, if you are hurting the integrity of what happens out on the diamond, whether by possible game-fixing (Rose still denies that, but he has over the years admitted almost everything short of that) or by taking illegal performance enhancing substances, it isn't really fare to the other great players to let you in. But back on the first hand, a lot of guys who took steroids and amphetamines (which were popular for decades before steroids entered the game) are in, many of whom we don't know what they did and a number where we do as well. Others, like Shoeless Joe Jackson are worthy of the hall but for one terrible (if understandable under the conditions) act. So overall, I think he should be in, but I'm not sure. Ask me on another day, I may go the other way.



EDIT: By the way, between Cobb and Rose, the 4000 hit club is a bit of a dubious honor. Nobody is close to it yet, but the handful of people who have a shot of getting there, Jeter (admittedly a long shot, but he's about 2 weeks ahead of Pete Rose's pace) and Ichiro (if you count his Japanese numbers, in which case he will get there in the next 2-3 years), will not exactly be in good company.
