Well the cities and towns that do have two baseball teams in them (Pennsylvania, Florida, California, and Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York) are pretty important places in America. It's mainly a publicity thing that they're there. But in terms of answering your question, it's really a difference in skill between two teams near each other. Like, for instance, the New York Yankees has always been a great overall team, and the Mets have been mediocre until recently, what with players like Jose Reyes and Johan Santana, they're coming up strong.

Phillies are the defending NL Champions and Won the World Series in 1980 and 2008 as opposed to the Pirates who's last World title was 1979, last winning season was 1992 and have finished dead last in their division.

White Sox won the first World Series championship in Chicago in over 90 years but have the worst fanbase in baseball, the Cubs are baseball's whipping boy, the one franchise where everybody loves to make fun of and keep down because they never win anything. They play in the national league's oldest ballpark and was recently sold to the Ricketts family, another family of cheapskates. The Cubs are considered to be the dumbest franchise in the history of sports. Sources from ESPN, FOX and MLB network all project the Cubs to finish dead last every year. Plus players and scouts regard the Cubs as a toxic franchise, nobody wants to play for this team except those who are about to end their careers.

Yankees are baseball's most successful, popular and wealthiest franchise and the defending world series champions and look to repeat as champions. Therefore they get all the media attention, the best players because everybody else is too stupid to spend any money, especially teams like the Cubs. The Mets play on long island and are known for signing players to big time contracts only to see those players get injured.

The rays, were used to be called the Devil Rays but changed their name in 2008 and somehow managed to make it all the way to the World Series but lost to Philadelphia. The Marlins were Florida's first baseball team and won the World Series twice in 1997 and 2003. They are the franchise that screwed the Cubs from their one and only shot at winning the National League Pennant.

Angels play in Anaheim and are the last California team to win the World Series. The Angels and their fans cherish the fact that their team has always played in Califorina and resent the Dodgers because they were originally from NYC. The Dodgers originally played in Brooklyn before moving to Los Angeles in 1958. Since moving to Los Angeles they are the most successful baseball franchise on the West Coast.

The Giants were orignally from NYC before moving to San Francisco in 1958. Despite winning a few NL pennants and division titles they have never won the World Series in the Bay Area. The San Diego padres have always played in California and have won the NL Pennant twice. Their first NL pennant they stole from the 1984 Cubs.

To quote Wedge Antilles: "Look at the SIZE of that thing!" NY, C*, and LA have HUGE populations in their metropolitan regions. Two teams is not an unfair situation; were they each to have only one team, their financial advantages over other franchises would be even more extreme. Philadelphia used to have two teams. So did St. Louis. New York sustained THREE teams for a long, long time. ----- * This just doesn't work as a city abbreviation, does it?

I hate to disagree with Utter Chaos, but there's a lot more than 300 miles between the Phillies and the Pirates.....they're more like 1,000,000 miles apart! :^)

Phillies/Pirates: Both old teams. The Phillies know how to win lately. The Pirates haven't been over 500 since 92.

White Sox/Cubbies: Both old teams and both couldn't win for a while. Cubs still can't win. White Sox won just a couple years ago.

Yankees/Mets: Both very wealthy teams. Yankees know how to win. Mets are terrible.

Rays/Marlins: Both are expansion teams and are boring to watch. The Marlins are slightly more successful.

Angels/Dodgers: Both have been in LA less than 60 years. Both make the playoffs often. The Dodgers have a better reputation and richer history.

Giants/Padres: Both aren't successful in Cali. Giants have more known players and are wealthier.

Yeah, sorry to the NL fans out there, but their teams are inferior. Though if you are looking for the difference between AL and NL I'd read this... In short, they kind of play the game a little different
