Question:
Which of the Gary Sheffield or Geoff Jenkins releasing was more shocking?

I think the Tigers releasing Sheffield was a little more suprising, since he was projected to be a starter, but they've released high salaried player's before (ex. Damion Easley). It caught me a little off guard that they'd be willing to give him all of that 14 million though. The Phillies have a reputation for being cheap. The Adam Eaton releasing wasn't that shocking, since he said he wouldn't accept a minor league assignment, but because Jenkins was due 8MM between this season, and next year's buyout, and has a decent arm, with alright defense, I figured he'd be worth holding onto than Stairs. In the event of an injury for Werth or Ibanez, Jenkins could have stepped in, even he's not that good. Stairs really can't play the OF. He'll really only be used in pinch hitting situations. He would have been easier to trade, only getting paid 1 million. My guess is now that Miguel Cairo, who's still in camp, will get that spot as the right-handed bat on the bench, if they don't sign Sheffield, Alou or someone else.

Both are beyond their prime and a huge injury risk so neither should be shocking. If I had to pick one I would say Sheffield because he is sitting on 499 homeruns and has the name recognition to bring a few fans to the ballpark.

What was shocking was Detroit's last place division finish last year.

They can finish last without 499 (no hit in clutch) homer man.

Also tickets are a tough sell this year in Motown.

Maybe some of their good youngsters will get a shot now.

I wish the Tigers well, however, and hope they do better this year.

None of them were very shocking at all.

I might have thought Sheffield would have stayed around to hit his 500th in Detroit.
