The Expos wanted a new stadium and wanted the city or the province to pay for it. But they didn't generate enough revenue to make it worthwhile for the city to pay up. Olympic Stadium, where the Expos used to play, went WAY WAY over budget, and the people were still paying for it with their taxes long after it was built. The people would not approve going through that again.
In addition, the team was losing a ton of money due to lack of fan support. They had very few fans who would pay to go to a game, even though they had some decent teams over the years. In the end they became the only MLB team had no TV contract - none of their games were televised in Montreal! - and their only "radio" broadcasts in the last couple of years were available on the internet because no radio station would pay the rights fees. It was really quite pathetic. So all in all, I really can't blame the ownership for picking up and going somewhere where they could make some money.

yes I do. I went to the deciding game back in the late 70 when the dodgers won over the expos when i think it was rick monday, who hit a home run late in the game at olympic stadium, to take the lead. There was ice or sleet throughout the game, but i was warmly dressed and i had lots of room to stretch out during the game. I was a little sad to see the expos lose that game. If the expos won that game, they would have made their first appearance in the world series. The next year, the expos i think were in first place by lots, but then the players went on strike, finishing the year without a world series. I am pretty sure the players went on strike or maybe the owners locked them out.

Montreal didn't let the Expo's leave!! The fans did,You see when baseball went on strike,Montreal had the best record, they were going to the worlds series,The fans were PISSED!!,I know this Bc i traveled to Montreal on Business many times,The fans were outraged!! alot of PPl in canada told me that Baseball players were Greedy and selfish,They Swear up and down they would never ever step foot in a ball park again,,And God Damn They didn't,They felt if anyone should strike it should be hockey, they felt, hockey was a much more dangerous game,I swear to God! The French are strange PPL!! but when they ban something,,They mean it!!

The Expos probably would have stayed if the strike never happened. In 1994, they were the best team out there. Them and the Yanks seemed to be a match up in the World Series. Attendance was outstanding that season. They had Alou, Walker, Pedro, Wetteland, Grissom, and whole lot more. Their lineup was so good. Then the strike came, and I guess the French-Canadians didn't have the heart to forgive the sport.

To help the Red Sox. The Expos leaving Montreal set in motion the most corrupt shell game that American Sports has ever seen.

Montreal Expos left do to fan support! They could never draw the crowds that they wanted to. They where playing in different countries during there last year. They even sold tickets for a Looney and still couldn't fill the stadium. Bottom line is that its a HOCKEY town!!

Motreal did what it could as a city to get the Expos to leave. Limited parking at Expo park, no english radio broadcasts. High beer prices. The French Canadians that run Montreal were glad to see them leave as they see baseball as an extention of American cultural domination. Washington is better for it

Montreal didn't have the money to have the team. The Expos weren't winning so they had no fans which again, no money.

Because the Expos couldn't draw much of a crowd in the last few years that the franchise existed. They would draw crowds of less than 8,000 fans. A team can't survive that long if that is the case.

Well, they're Canadian and it is America's past-time. Also there was hardly any fans at their games, they sold more tickets in one night during their last season, that night was dollar dog night. Although I can see why fans come out that night. I think that Washington deserves a team anyway and they're doing a whole lot better in D.C. Again, America's past-time and the capital of America is D.C. makes sense to me. It would be like Ottawa without hockey.

Montreal is not a baseball town. They had no fan support and the stadium was literally falling to pieces.

The franchise was losing Million of dollars. Due to lack of a Fan base and local enthusiam, they decided to move the franchise to Washington. Face it Montreal is a hockey town.

Baseball is full of itself. Now they are talking of moving the Tampa Bay Rays there. From low attendance to none. If they move my team, I will never watch or attend another baseball game in my life.

Has anyone in Montreal noticed that they are gone? That should answer your question.
