he is a great catcher, arguably the best in baseball currently, was one of the leaders in batting average, and got snubbed in all star voting, with ivan rodriguez starting for the A.L. was this just a popularity contest?

Im a huge red sox fan and even I agree that Jorge got snubbed. he and pudge production wise were pretty close Jorge has 8 hrs and 45 rbi and Pudge has 8 hrs and 43 rbi, but Jorge is batting .336 compared to Pudge's .280. Jorge definately deserves the starting spot on the AL all star team.

Yes, Posada was snubbed. And as for Georgie Porgie's assertion that Yankee fans are not loyal and don't root for their team, that's crap. We vote for our players, but only the ones who deserve it. We don't sit in front of our computers and vote 500 times for our guys. Believe it or not, Yankee fans actually have lives unlike the fans of some teams.
The fact that Rodriguez is a 14-time all star should make no difference. He's not as good as he was in Texas is, 30 pounds lighter (wink, wink), and is "Pudge" no longer. Posada is just as good an offensive player now. In fact, Posada may have had the higher honor, as he was selected by the PLAYERS, which means he really did deserve to be on the all-star team. Being voted by your peers means much more than being voted in by fans. BTW, the Yankees are having a terrible year, but Posada still was the primary catcher for THREE championship teams, unlike Ivan (I'll call just fastballs so I can throw out more runners) Rodriguez, who lucked out with the Marlins in 2003.

It's the same old story with the all-star voting, an issue that really isn't discussed much: do you vote for the best players overall, or do you vote for the guys having the best seasons? Often the answer is two different players.
In this case, Pudge Rodriguez probably is going to the Hall of Fame. He's been a great all-around catcher for a lot of years. You can't blame fans for voting for him. Jorge Posada is having a great season, but you wouldn't take his career over Pudge's.
At least they both go this way.

It would be hard to say he was snubbed when he was not picked ahead of Pudge and Victor Martinez who are both having good years. The American League was only going with two catchers and someone was going to be left out and it was Posada. Not much a manager can do when you are over stocked at the catcher position.

Well a lot of people have jumped off the yankee bandwagon this year. and yes the all star game has a lot to do with popularity. Jimmy rollins got snubbed also.

It's always this way. It is mostly a popularity contest and I am pissed that Jorge, who is having an awesome year despite the Yankees not doing so well, did't get in.

It's about popularity which is why i think they should take the voting from the fans & let the managers decide.

Because Pudge is better...an 14 time all star....the most career starts for catchers in MLB history.
heck yeah, it is a popularity contest. seeing as how they are more NY fans than Tiger fans how he got "snubbed" (as you call it) is incredible. I guess Tiger fans are just more loyal, knowledgable, and actually root for their team.

it cant be a popularity contest, barry bonds is in their. but i do agree with u. this is stupid, how are the dumbest players getting in, like micheal young and barry bonds, and leaving great players out like ryan howard and orlando cabrara
