Is David Wright the best third baseman the New York Mets have ever developed?

Before Wright, the Mets had somewhere around 40 different thrid basemen in their team's history, mostly from other teams. The best of that group is obviously Robin Ventura, the worst? Take your pick! Basically, unless there is someone else in the 46 year history of the Mets who was better, is David Wright by far the best thrid baseman the team has ever had come up their farm system?

Over the 46 year history of our team, there have been 63 different people playing third base for us. However, only seven of those players played enough time at the hot corner to even qualify for career batting average numbers at that spot, so the following players have been the Mets primary third basemen since 1962:

David Wright (2004-present)

Ty Wigginton (2002-2004)

Robin Ventura (1999-2001)

Edgardo Alfonzo (1995-1998)

Howard Johnson (1985-1993)

Hubie Brooks (1980-1984)

Wayne Garrett (1969-1976)

The Mets platooned players at third from 1962-1968 and from 1977-1979. Here are their career numbers with the Mets:

Wright: .311 BA, 97 HR, 365 RBI, 77 SB

Wigginton: .270 BA, 29 HR, 131 RBI, 20 SB

Ventura: .260 BA, 77 HR, 265 RBI, 6 SB

Alfonzo: .296 BA, 47 HR, 247 RBI, 26 SB

Johnson: .254 BA, 185 HR, 586 RBI, 180 SB

Brooks: .272 BA, 28 HR, 219 RBI, 28 SB

Garrett: .237 BA, 55 HR, 295 RBI, 33 SB

Bottom line: Wright is the best homegrown 3B the Mets have ever had, but Howard Johnson remains the team's all-time best at that position (and not Robin Ventura, who was good, but not like HoJo) Wayne Garrett was probably the worst, but remember: 3Bs didn't hit the longball in the 70s unless your name was Mike Schmidt.

Yes, David Wright is the best thrid baseman that the Mets have ever "developed" in their system.

HoJo, Robin Ventura, and Ray Knight were good, but none developed in the system. HoJo came from Detroit, Ventura from the White Sox, and Knight from the Reds.

Earlier there was Wayne Garret who was adequate, but not great. But, in 1973, he did hit some key HR's.

Easily, Ventura was a White Sox farm boy and Johnson played with Detroit before ever making it to Queens, New York. The closest homegrown 3rd Bagger would be Ty Wiggington and David Wright beats that guy hands down!

Umm if you all read the question, he asked if David Wright was the best 3B the Mets ever delveloped through their farm system. HoJo came from Detroit and Ventura came up with the White Sox, so the Mets did not develop them.

Wright may be the best non-pitcher the Mets ever developed and who contributed significantly to the team by the time his career is over. May he and Reyes wear Mets colours for their entire careers!

HoJo beats out Ventura as the second best at 3B in terms of what he did for the Mets. Career-wise, maybe not, but in New York, definitely.

completely in an incredibly manly way. he's often between the perfect gamers in 4 years time. Edited after king c: david wright way extra desirable than jeter. have you ever been to a met sport 80% of ythe human beings there have a Wright jersey and 10% of those human beings have i like YOU DAVID. or you won't be in a position to bypass incorrect WITH WRIGHT. Wright is extra of a favourite then jeter by capacity of far and could proceed to be.

Honestly, I had to ask my teenage son's opinion on this one.

Wright is one of the top 10 to go through the Mets' farm system, considering the way he is currently playing, but he still has not reached his full potential. Ventura would have been the absolute best player except he got hurt and sat out for two years, playing only during 1999-2001.

David Wright is amazing. I don't like the Mets but you have to admit how amazing he is defensively he makes some great catches and plays. He was on baseball tonight's web gems a lot last season. he is awesome offensively too. Definitely the best 3B the Mets have ever had. plus hes smokin hot!

wish he played for my phils!

Well, it might be a little tough for him to beat out Howard Johnson, but I would say he is the bet Mets Third Baseman.

HoJo was better than Robin Ventura.

I hate the Muts but I have to admit David Wright is good. He's not A-Rod but he's good.
