Over the 46 year history of our team, there have been 63 different people playing third base for us. However, only seven of those players played enough time at the hot corner to even qualify for career batting average numbers at that spot, so the following players have been the Mets primary third basemen since 1962:
David Wright (2004-present)
Ty Wigginton (2002-2004)
Robin Ventura (1999-2001)
Edgardo Alfonzo (1995-1998)
Howard Johnson (1985-1993)
Hubie Brooks (1980-1984)
Wayne Garrett (1969-1976)
The Mets platooned players at third from 1962-1968 and from 1977-1979. Here are their career numbers with the Mets:
Wright: .311 BA, 97 HR, 365 RBI, 77 SB
Wigginton: .270 BA, 29 HR, 131 RBI, 20 SB
Ventura: .260 BA, 77 HR, 265 RBI, 6 SB
Alfonzo: .296 BA, 47 HR, 247 RBI, 26 SB
Johnson: .254 BA, 185 HR, 586 RBI, 180 SB
Brooks: .272 BA, 28 HR, 219 RBI, 28 SB
Garrett: .237 BA, 55 HR, 295 RBI, 33 SB
Bottom line: Wright is the best homegrown 3B the Mets have ever had, but Howard Johnson remains the team's all-time best at that position (and not Robin Ventura, who was good, but not like HoJo) Wayne Garrett was probably the worst, but remember: 3Bs didn't hit the longball in the 70s unless your name was Mike Schmidt.
