As you may remember Joey Votto took a lot of time off playing two years ago because he was dealing with "depression." Do you believe rewarding him the very next year with the MVP sends a bad message to kids that it's ok to skip out on your responsibilities just because you are upset?

This sends a fantastic message to children. It shows that even if you are facing an extremely challenging time (such as the death of a loved one and depression), you still need to keep working to turn your life around. Votto didn't give up- he worked hard to get to where he is now, and he was rewarded, not only with the MVP and the All-Star selection, but by knowing that he had the best season of his career and helped lead the Reds to the postseason, despite the fact that everybody thought going into the season that the Cards would win the division. I wish that more people were as determined as him to improve their lives.

Congratulations Mr. Byrd for your great defensive play. There I said it. I got My Homie Joey's back. Joey Votto is not a jerk. The man has had some rough times over the years and he was caught off guard. The Reds have gone an entire decade without any competitive fire and the minute they start showing some they are the jerks. Maybe that's an excuse but any way, thanks again Marlon for giving the Reds home field advantage in the World Series... much easier to get tickets at Great American then Yankee Stadium.

Simple answer is no. Depression is a serious mental disease that affects many people every year in some cases it leads to suicide. It's not "skipping out on your responsibilities just because you are upset". Joey Votto was the Most Valuable Player in the National League and that's why he on the award, he turned a perennial losing team into division champions.

No because he has enough money to skip out on some things because of personal problems. That doesn't make him bad obviously, but he has the time and money to do so. But him winning the MVP just means that he worked hard to get that, and so it'll actually send a positive message to kids to work hard.

Wow. just wow. There is nothing similar between being upset and being depressed. He lost his Dad, who was his biggest fan and mentor. It triggered his depression. I think he's shown how responsible he is by coming back and leading the Reds to a division title. If anything, it sends a positive message to kids. You must be a bitter Pujols fan. Votto deserved the title, Pujols didn't. You win idiotic post of the day, congrats.

What?? No, of course not. He wasn't just slacking off or being irresponsible, depression is a very tough thing to deal with it,and he was also trying to cope with his father's death. It's good he got the help he needed then came back and had a great season this year. To say it 'sends a bad message to children' is really stupid in my opinion. If you've been through anxiety and depression, you know how awful it can be.

No, please also get your facts straight. Depression is not being upset and Votto also missed time because of Vertigo. He obviously overcame his health issues from 2009. Why isn't that a good message for the children?

No it doesn't it shows how to make a comeback from a state of depression like votto did.

Let's see.

What problems have the 2 MVPs for this year had?

One had a legitimate medical condition brought on by stress.

The other one nearly blew his whole career doing drugs.

And you think the one who was depressed is sending the wrong message?

I've always felt that if you are going to do something, be good at it.

Guess that applies to you and your ignorance as well. Congratulations.

You almost make it sound like he took time off to sell crack to school kids.

Votto's father died and their were other family issues that weighed on him heavily. In some cases depression becomes debilatating. It's a disease .It's not like he was having a bad day and said "I think I'll take a year off"-some people never rebound from it-kudos to him for overcoming it.

I think just because he can't deal with his problems better he shouldn't be penalized for that in his career. Besides I don't think children care about Joey Votto and how or why he won the MVP.

Does it bother you that everybody here is calling you ignorant? You really need to go back to school, and ask your teacher about the definition of "depression".

To answer your question: NO!!!!!

Your putting quotation marks around "depression", shows what an ignorant fool you are. Depression is a sickness, not something you get because they cancelled your favorite soap opera.

No. You're the only one who could come up with that reasoning. Children will be just fine.

I see your point, but i disagre with it.
