Why do they call Yankee Stadium's right field the short porch, even though left field is nearly the same?

Right field is 314' from home plate, left field is 318'. So why not also call it the short porch in left field?

Those are the distances down the lines, right?

Take a look at the distances in the power alleys, and you'll see that right is significantly shallower than left. That's the "short porch."

Here are the field dimensions:

Left Field 318'

Left Center 399'

Center 408'

Right Center 385'

Right Field 314'

So, you can see the the right center power alley is 14 feet shallower than in left center. You will also see this when you look at the field diagram at http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/nyy/ballpark/seating_pricing.jsp, you will also see that left center is significantly deeper.

I know that when the New Yankee Stadium opened, a lot of people were talking about a "jet stream" out to right field that was aiding homers hit there. I think it has something to do with the wind patterns of where the New Yankee Stadium is positioned in relation to the water.

It has to do with the way the wind comes in. The wind makes right SEEM about 290' and left SEEM about 350'. It's also because of the gap (385' in right center, 399' in left center)
