What is considered a hit in Baseball?

I know it's a strange questions and seems quite simple. But please keep reading.

I am trying to do the "Beat The Streak" fantasy game on MLB.com and I guess I may be a little confused as to what is considered a hit. I thought a hit was when a player hits the ball and gets on base. Am I wrong? And are there exceptions to this?

My example. Albert Pujols last light in the 8th innning hit a ground ball to the third baseman T. Fraizer. Fraizer bobbled the ball which in turn allowed Pujols to get to first base and gave Fraizer an error. Since there was an error on Fraizer, does that take away the hit by Pujols? Because when I look at Pujols' stats, he is not credited with a single hit last night which in turn makes my "Beat The Streak" go back to zero.

Can someone help me understand this? Or are the stats incorrect?

Thanks!

A batter who hits the ball and reaches base safely is NOT credited with a hit when:

- The defense fails to put out the batter-runner due to an error (error)

- The defense plays on another runner, but fails due to an error (fielder's choice)

- The defense plays on another runner, but fails despite errorless play if the scorer judges that the batter-runner could have been put out (fielder's choice)

So yes, since the fielder was charged with an error, Pujols is not credited with a hit, but is charged with a time at-bat.

The two that have answered before this are correct. A hit is any ball hit by the batter that a fielder can not field cleanly within the foul lines. Some balls that are hit very hard hear a player or take a strange hop get credited with a hit due to how hard it is to field the ball. In the long run it is all up to the umpire in the press box and what he wants to call it.

As for a fielders choice it is not considered a hit because the fielder could have gotten the player hitting the ball out but choose to get the player closer to home out instead to hopefully avoid the other team from scoring that inning.

Pujols does not get a hit because of the error made my Fraizer. Generally, a play is considered an when a fielder should have made the play. This includes bobbling the ball, throwing the ball away, or just missing the ball completely (when it SHOULD have been fielded). Errors therein void the hit. Otherways that hits can be void are through fielders choice which is where another runner is out through a force out after a player hits the ball.

You get a hit if you reach a base after batting the ball into the fair territory (the quarter circle between the white lines) without opponent fielders getting credited with an error or, if i'm right, a fielder's choice.

At your question: Yes, because Pujols wouldn't get a base hit without Fraizer's error, he didn't get credit with a hit. So yes, there are exceptions.
